Password Reset Instructions

How-To

Welcome to the documentation for Microsoft's Self-Service Password Reset. This guide will help you get started quickly.

*NOTE* If you haven't configured a valid MFA for your account, start here: Initial Setup

Using the website passwordreset.microsoftonline.com you'll be able to unlock your account as well as reset your password.

To do this:

  1. Go to passwordreset.microsoftonline.com
    • Follow the prompts
    • Enter your email address
  2. Enter the characters shown in the picture
  3. Choose what you want to do:
    • “Forgot Password” to reset your password
    • “I know my password, but still can’t sign in” to unlock your account
  4. Use a valid, previously configured method of Multi-Factor Authentication to confirm your identity
  5. Await validation — you're done!

Multi-Factor Authentication Setup

  1. Log in to https://myaccount.microsoft.com
  2. A prompt will appear stating “Let’s keep your account secure”
    • Click “Next”
  3. The next page will recommend installing Microsoft Authenticator, but you can choose Hardware Token (if one has been supplied to you), Phone (text or call), and/or Email.
    • If you would like to set up Authenticator on your iOS or Android device, click “Next” and follow the setup process to complete.
    • If not, click “Set up a different way to sign in” and continue to the next step.
  4. After clicking “Set up a different way to sign in”, you’ll be prompted to choose between:
    • Microsoft Authenticator
    • Hardware Token
    • Phone
    • Email

Valid MFA Methods

Authenticator Verification

Use an authenticator app like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator to verify your identity.

This application can be installed on your county-issued phone (if available) or your personal device.

  1. From the initial prompt, click ‘Next’
  2. On the next screen, the following message appears. Click ‘Next’ to advance.
  3. A QR code will appear that you’ll scan with your authenticator app
  4. On your phone, scan this code and walk through the setup as follows:
    1. Click the QR code icon
    2. Scan the code on the computer
    3. Once scanned, a window will appear on the computer providing a code
    4. Enter the code and click “Yes” on your phone
    5. Once confirmed, the app is added to your account

Phone Verification

This option allows you to receive a code via call or text. After clicking ‘Phone’ during MFA setup, you’ll see the following screen.

  • *NOTE* - Use these instructions for either a phone call or a text

    Any valid phone number that can receive texts can be used, and multiple numbers can be added with qualifying names.

    When choosing the text option, you’ll follow this process:

    1. After entering your phone number for texting, you’ll receive a screen to enter the code.
    2. Once confirmed, you’ll see a confirmation window.
    3. After clicking “Done”, you may need to MFA back into myaccount.microsoft.com. Once back in, you’ll see the following sign-in method added:

Email Verification

Any email that you have access to can be used. It’s recommended to use a different email than your county email, since that is the account whose password is being reset.

  1. When Email is selected, a prompt will appear to enter the email of choice.
  2. A code will be sent to the email you entered, and the next prompt will allow you to enter the code.
  3. Once the code is validated, you’ll receive a confirmation window.
  4. The email will be added to your account.

Token Verification

Please email Service Desk with and include the ID of the SafeID to get this configured for your account.
